Family Therapy
Therapist-led support for communication, relationships, conflict, and challenges affecting the family as a whole.
Emotional and behavioral concerns can affect more than one person. A child’s difficulties may create stress between parents and children. Conversations may start centering on conflict. Family members may respond differently to the same problem, and the same disagreements can surface again and again.
Family therapy at the ADHD, Mood & Behavior Center provides a place to understand these patterns and work toward healthier ways of communicating and responding to one another.

When Can Family Therapy Help?
Families may consider therapy when emotional, behavioral, or communication concerns begin to affect relationships or when recurring family patterns make existing challenges harder to manage.
Seeking family therapy does not mean every family member necessarily needs treatment. Who participates and what therapy addresses depends on the circumstances bringing the family in.

What Does Family Therapy Focus On?
Rather than focusing only on one person’s symptoms, family therapy considers the relationships and interactions surrounding the concern. A therapist may help family members recognize where communication repeatedly breaks down, understand different perspectives, and develop more constructive ways to respond to difficult situations.
The purpose is not to determine who is at fault. It is to understand the patterns affecting family relationships and identify ways those patterns can change.

When One Person’s Concerns Affect the Family
ADHD, anxiety, mood concerns, emotional dysregulation, and other difficulties can influence everyday family interactions. Problems with organization or follow-through can become repeated disagreements about responsibilities; anxiety may affect routines or participation in activities; emotional outbursts can influence siblings and the way family members communicate with one another.
Family therapy focuses on the relationship and communication patterns surrounding these challenges. When one family member also needs individual therapy or a psychiatric evaluation, that care can be considered separately.

Family Therapy and Individual Psychiatric Care
Family therapy does not replace a psychiatric evaluation when there are unresolved questions about diagnosis, medication, or significant psychiatric symptoms. Merritt Hubsher, MD, provides psychiatric evaluation and treatment; family therapy is provided separately through the Center’s therapy services. Some families may use only therapy — in other situations, therapy and psychiatric care may address different parts of the overall concern.

Finding the Right Starting Point
It is not always obvious whether a family should begin with family therapy, parent support, individual therapy, or a psychiatric evaluation. Some families primarily need help with communication and relationships; others need strategies for responding to a child’s behavior; in other situations, an individual concern needs separate attention. Our front desk can help determine which available service and provider may fit the reason you are contacting the Center.
