ADHD & Executive-Function Coaching

Practical, therapist-led support for organization, planning, time management, task completion, and everyday functioning.
ADHD and executive-function difficulties can affect much more than attention. Someone may know what needs to get done but still struggle to start, organize the steps, manage time, or follow through consistently.

ADHD and executive-function coaching at the ADHD, Mood & Behavior Center focuses on these practical challenges. Our therapists help patients identify where everyday routines are breaking down and develop strategies they can realistically use at school, work, and home.

This is a therapist-led service. It is separate from the psychiatric ADHD evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management provided by Merritt Hubsher, MD.
  • Format: Therapist-led coaching
  • Provided by: Our therapists

What Are Executive-Function Skills?

Executive-function skills affect how we plan, stay organized, manage time, remember responsibilities, and follow through on what we need to do. When these skills are difficult, everyday responsibilities at school, work, or home can become harder to manage.

Coaching goes beyond giving patients another checklist. The goal is to identify where these challenges are getting in the way and develop strategies that fit the person’s actual responsibilities and routines.

Who May Benefit

Executive-function coaching may help when organization, planning, time management, or follow-through regularly interferes with school, work, or daily responsibilities.

For students, these difficulties often become more noticeable as school requires greater independence. Adults may face similar challenges in a different setting — work deadlines, household responsibilities, appointments, and competing priorities that are hard to manage consistently.
Getting started on assignments or responsibilities
Estimating and managing time
Prioritizing competing demands
Maintaining routines
Managing distractions
Organizing schoolwork, work, or personal tasks
Remembering deadlines and responsibilities
Breaking larger projects into manageable steps
Completing tasks consistently
Keeping track of materials or information

What Does Coaching Focus On?

Sessions focus on practical strategies patients can use outside therapy. The specific approach is shaped around the challenges affecting the patient’s school, work, home life, or everyday responsibilities.

The same strategy will not work for every student or adult. Coaching is shaped around the situations where the individual is having difficulty and the skills they want to strengthen.
Planning and prioritization
Organization
Time management
Task initiation and completion
Breaking larger assignments or projects into steps
Developing more consistent routines
Managing competing responsibilities
Recognizing patterns that interfere with follow-through
Building greater independence with everyday responsibilities

Coaching Is Different From an ADHD Evaluation

Attention and executive-function difficulties can affect organization, planning, time management, concentration, and follow-through. But needing help in these areas does not necessarily answer the question of whether someone has ADHD.

That is where the distinction between coaching and psychiatric evaluation matters. One focuses on building practical strategies for everyday challenges, while the other looks at the clinical questions behind those difficulties. Depending on the person’s needs, these services may also be used alongside one another.

Coaching vs. ADHD Evaluation
Executive-Function Coaching
Practical skills and strategies. Does not determine whether someone has ADHD or another contributing concern. Provided by the Center’s therapists.
Psychiatric ADHD Evaluation
Diagnostic clarification and medication management when appropriate, provided by Dr. Hubsher. May be an appropriate starting point when the diagnosis is uncertain, or there are questions about psychiatric treatment.

Can Coaching Be Used Alongside ADHD Treatment?

Yes. Executive-function coaching can be used independently or alongside psychiatric care when appropriate. Someone receiving psychiatric treatment may still need practical help with organization, planning, routines, or follow-through — others seek coaching without receiving psychiatric care through the Center at all.
